So Long, Tiny Home

As we’ve posted, we were planning to have a tiny home, about 240 sq. ft., built and delivered to our property. We were hoping to have it there before winter sets in. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, the tiny home turned out not to be the best choice for us, so we decided to go in a different direction. First we looked at a concept called “shed to house” where a storage shed is converted to a (usually) small, although maybe bigger than a tiny home, house. Here are some examples.

However, our excavator, Dan, who is clearing land for us, referred us to Robert, an independent builder. After meeting with him, we decided to have him build us a small cabin, around 500 sq. ft., to replace the tiny home. People often ask why we don’t just go ahead and build a bigger cabin–we are planning to build a cabin of 1000-1200 sq. ft. some time in the future. The answers are that 1) we don’t have the money right now to build a structure that large, and 2) we hope to make all our mistakes on the small structure and not on our final home. After we build the bigger cabin we can use the small one for guests or maybe as an AirBnB.

Robert is hoping to have the small cabin ready for us to move in, although not completely finished inside, before Thanksgiving. We would then complete the finishing ourselves while living there.

Wish us luck!
