Quiet Time
Things have been pretty quiet here on the blog for the past while. We’re still in the temporary cabin at North Haven Campground where we fled to escape the winter and to preserve the RV from freezing damage. But we haven’t been completely idle; we’ve been
- Working to finalize the plans for building a cabin
- Designing and acquiring components of the off-grid solar energy system to power the RV and subsequently the cabin
- Researching and acquiring composting toilets, 1 for the RV and 2 for the cabin
- Going over the soil test that we had done and getting the needed soil amendments for the garden
- Ordering some fruit trees
- Buying a pickup and getting needed repairs for it (it’s a 30 year old truck to go with our 30 year old RV!)
- Getting a 450 gallon water tank and pump to use to haul water from Bonners Ferry to our land
- Getting on the wait list for a 2500 gallon underground cistern
- Designing whole house water filtration system for the cabin
- Researching and designing an in-slab radiant heating system
- Researching tankless water heaters to provide domestic and radiant heating
- Researching rain water collection systems
- Getting some designs for a garden/woodshed
- WHEW!
Future posts will talk more about these item as we implement or build them. We’ll also include links to the products we buy and use so you can take a look if you’re interested.
One thing to be answered is, “Can an elderly couple really go off-grid and construct a cabin in the woods?” Tune in to find out.
